    Dr. Pasternak has over 25 years of experience as a refractive surgeon with the United States military. As a participant in the FDA trials to approve laser surgery in the US, Dr. Pasternak was the first military eye surgeon in the US to perform refractive surgery. He founded the Laser Vision Center at Bethesda Naval Hospital, and developed and ran the program to offer LASIK to US Naval Academy midshipmen, opening up career options for over 8,000 new military officers over the last 20 years. Dr. Pasternak was instrumental in studies determining the safety and effectiveness of LASIK surgery in Navy and Marine Corps aviators, which ultimately led to the approval of LASIK surgery for all warfighters. Dr. Pasternak has performed over 10,000 eye surgeries and has trained over 80 surgeons in the art of refractive surgery. Dr. Pasternak now brings his years of experience of performing and studying LASIK surgery, and his dedication to safety, predictability and the best possible outcomes to the patients of LasikPlus. Dr. Pasternak has been happily married for 25+ years and is the father of three young adults. In his free time, he enjoys tennis, skiing, fitness, and cooking.

    Dr. Houghtaling has been performing laser corneal refractive surgery since 2013. He served as Chief of the Refractive Surgery Division and Chief of the Cornea Service at Walter Reed Hospital, which performs LASIK on military patients, including US Naval Academy midshipmen, Special Forces, and Aviators. Dr. Houghtaling has published research articles on refractive surgery and has spoken at international refractive surgery meetings. He completed a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive surgery at The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and serves on institutional boards overseeing ocular research protocols. He has been involved in Global Ophthalmic mission trips and served overseas as an Army Ophthalmologist.   • Michael Summerfield, M.D.

    Michael Summerfield, M.D. is a leader in the specialty of refractive and cataract surgery. He completed his training in ophthalmology at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center Department of Ophthalmology. During his medical residency, he received multiple awards, which included the Joseph Dessoff Award for outstanding performance by an ophthalmology resident and the Simpson Award for ophthalmology research. During his professional career, he has spent over 10 years teaching surgical techniques. Dr. Summerfield’s primary interests are in the areas of complex intraocular surgery, cataract and refractive surgery including PRK and LASIK eye surgery, and corneal cross-linking. He currently serves on faculty as a Residency Program Director at Georgetown University. In addition, he has established a successful medical and surgical practice in the Washington DC metro area. Dr. Summerfield has received multiple awards for research and teaching and has published peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. He has been invited to lecture in the U.S., as well as internationally. He is actively involved in many ophthalmologic societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is also currently actively involved as an editor of EyeWiki, an online resource for physicians and patients.

    Dr. Weltman has been working in optometry since 2003 and joined LasikPlus in 2005. She is very experienced in providing pre- and post-operative care for both corneal and lens based refractive procedures. For the last five years, she has trained new LasikPlus optometrists. Dr. Weltman has been recognized with the Outstanding Service Award and received the prestigious LasikPlus P.E.A.R.L. award in 2010 for Professionalism, Excellence, Achievement, Results and Leadership. Since 2009, Dr. Weltman has served as the Northeast representative on the Optometric Advisory Board for LasikPlus.
